The neurologist said that my daughter has a very mild case of cerebral palsy what resources are available?

1075364739 aa80d91463 m The neurologist said that my daughter has a very mild case of cerebral palsy what resources are available?
took my 7 yr old to the dr to go over her recent MRI. She always complains of headaches. As the new dr (neurologist) is going over her medical history, I asked her could her headaches have any thing to do with her horrible hand writing (that is slooowly improving). after doing a complete neurological exam, she states that my daughter is a bit weaker on her right side, (she is right handed) goes into telling me the head ache meds that she is putting her on, then says ” she didn’t tip toe as a baby did she?”. Yes, Yes she did. We thought it was the cutest thing! She didn’t walk until 15 months old, and was a little speech delayed in younger toddler years. we assumed it was because she was 6 weeks premature. The doctor said well i think she has a very mild case of cerebral palsy. I was stunned, ive seen cerebral palsy before and that wasn’t what i was expecting. She said when you come back in 3 weeks we will work on OT for her. Left the room. HUh what?? what can i expect? what resources are available to her if this is in fact her final diagnosis?

What sorts of Martial Arts would be good ones for someone with mild Cerebral Palsy?

March 26, 2011 in Questions

1076219210 e5bccd8a7e m What sorts of Martial Arts would be good ones for someone with mild Cerebral Palsy?
Hey guys this is a follow up to my original question about anyone knowing of any martial arts dojos in the Des Moines area. I know people will work with me if I am unable to do a move due to my Cerebral Palsy but does anyone know of any martial arts style that will take this negative and turn it into a positive, or do you guys know of any styles that would be good for me to do. So here’s a little bit more information on my condition. I have slight Cerebral Palsy, the effect it has on my body is that I have tight muscles and have trouble with gross and motor function. Basically, my movements are jerky. Also, I have a problem with doing some acrobatic moves like the cartwheel. I have tried for years to do this simple move and have yet to accomplish it. I think its due to the brain muscle disconnection that Cerebral Palsy causes. I would like to know what martial arts you guys think I should do now that you have all the information you need and yes I do know that some/most instructors will work with me to modify a move if I am unable to do it. So, let me know what Martial Arts you think I should look into?
Thanks
Okay so this is to clear up what I meant by slight CP and the cartwheel problem. My “slight” CP only effects by balance and coordination that’s it and my fine motor skills other wise I can walk and run just fine. Also, I can do some acrobatic moves, they are just harder to pull off or at least some of them are. Others that I have tried and failed to do so far like the cartwheel. I just used that as an example. Also, just to clarify,my condition is so mild that if I passed you on the street and saw me you would not know that I have it unless you have had some sort of medical training like being a doctor, physician’s assistant or the like. Just thought I should clear that up so people don’t get the wrong idea.

March 24, 2011 in Questions

4847127576 e1626e73d7 m My boyfriend has a mild case of cerebral palsy... please help us!?
like i said, he has a mild case of cerebral palsy. he can function completely normal, its just he doesn’t use his right hand and he walks with a minor limp. he is so smart and funny and capable of doing anything he sets his mind to. he is 19 and has never had a job. he doesn’t even try getting a job because he is afraid he will be rejected because of his condition and because he gets very nervous. he is going to school for accounting. is there any suggestions you might have? any advise on how i can raise his self esteem and push him to get a job? where would be a good place for him to work? and what if a company does reject him because of his condition?
although its illegal what can we do if it does happen?

Can chronic pain (due to mild spastic cerebral palsy) cause fatal heart or circulatory issues?

March 1, 2011 in Questions

5163784651 36bb40b09e m Can chronic pain (due to mild spastic cerebral palsy) cause fatal heart or circulatory issues?
I’m 33 years old. I have mild spastic cerebral palsy and I suffer from chronic pain. I’ve seen the toll that the cerebral palsy and the chronic pain has taken on my body over the years. I figure that given the constant and continuous strains and pains that my body has endured over the years, that there is also a strong possibility of future heart or health issues caused by them. I would like to know:

What are these potential issues that I might have to face in the future?
and
Can they lead to an early fatality?

I’m hoping that there is someone here who is walking the same path as I am, (either a chronic pain sufferer or a cerebral palsy sufferer), who understands what I mean by this and might have some answers.
