University of Verona (Italy) – ALTAIR Robotics Lab metropolis.sci.univr.it Submitted by Andrea Calanca metropolis.sci.univr.it In this project, the focus of interest is analyzing case studies involving a severe pathology (level III, IV and V of the GMFCS classification) and building a suitable prototype for active orthosis. We wish to understand if it is possible to improve patient condition through assisted deambulation; we monitor the following factors: 1. Motor control improvement (performance) 2. Improvement in autonomy (learning, rehabilitation) 3. Reduction of disuse syndrome 4. Reduction of medical costs At this preliminary stage, it is not important to know how much a patient can improve what matters is establishing if improvement is possible. By having patients test the prototype, we are in a favorable condition to detect if any improvement is occurring, pertaining to any of the four factors above. Differently from traditional therapy, we encourage active learning from the patient instead of relying on the patient being passive during treatment. In fact, this active participation on the patient’s side is a leading concept in our research; our prototype aims to enter in the patient sensory-motor loop, offering additional power and an amplified sense of movement.
