I have an adult brother who is mute, and is fascinated by computers. He is retarded, and has cerebral palsy.?

May 20, 2011 in Questions

5164387864 1b15e93274 m I have an adult brother who is mute, and is fascinated by computers. He is retarded, and has cerebral palsy.?
He has an assistive device that allows him to press certain buttons to have the device play recorded questions and comments.

He hates it, because it rarely allows him to communicate his thoughts and needs beyond, “I’m hungry,” or other basic statements.

I have read the information on computers with touch screens, and some of the software, and found that helpful. We have access to teachers, and special education software for children to learn basic reading and math skills, but he has not shown any interest in those, because they do not allow him to communicate.

His present method of communication is self-learned. If he sees an ad on TV, he searches magazines for the same product ad, and presents the ad and his notebook and pen to someone who can write. Once the product is listed to his satisfaction, he waits until one of us can take him to purchase the item.

Still, this is not conversation, and we would like to know if anyone else has a solution.

What benefits are available for adult with Cerebral Palsy who recently came to live with my family?

March 25, 2011 in Questions

5129860821 33a5a1c7ab m What benefits are available for adult with Cerebral Palsy who recently came to live with my family?
My cousin who has Cerebral Palsy came to live with me about a month ago. At first there was virtually no communication until I got him a cell phone for emergencies and he sent me the most unbelievable text. I wept….because I had no clue that there was this bright, funny, and compassionate man living inside this body that he stives to control. I have now got him a laptop and set him up on email, facebook, but my mind is racing as to what benefits could there be for this gentle soul. He only can speak about three words verbally, and I can’t afford what I know is out there to make his life better. He is so bright!! He is my cousin by marriage and this is my first time knowing anything about him. We live in Carrollton, TX, USA…so if anyone has information on speaking tools, wheelchairs, handicap devices, groups in our area that meet and do activities, even furthering his education…please let me know. We are so excited right now for just cracking open the door of communication.
Thanks for you help and guidance!!

How to discipline my adult child with cerebral palsy?

March 24, 2011 in Questions

4182473529 42b917b77d m How to discipline my adult child with cerebral palsy?
My 24 yr. old daughter has cerebral palsy. She cannot walk, she uses a wheelchair outside for outings, etc. , but likes to crawl around on the floor at home. She has perfect speech and knows right from wrong, so she’s pretty good cognitively. For the last couple of years she has become more and more difficult. She hits me, slaps me, etc. when I tell her its time to get a bath, go to bed, etc. Even when it’s time to do something fun that she wants/likes to do; like go to a ballgame, bowling, swimming, etc. It’s like she just wants to be contrary!! I have tried time outs, ignoring her, everything possible but to no avail. She has no problems with anyone at day habilitation or anywhere, she is an angel for them, it’s just me… her mother. I am at my wits ends with her. I have consider taking her to see a psychologist, but her support coordinator thinks it’s just an issue with me – that I have to ignore. Her daddy and I are divorced so he doesn’t live with us and doesn’t have to deal with these problems. He will talk to her on the phone about her acting up and she’ll promise to behave for me, but it doesn’t last. Plus I want her to listen to me! I don’t want to have to call her daddy every timee she misbehaves.

Has anyone else out there had to deal with a child like this, or does anyone have any suggestions?

Can adult w/ cerebral palsy own a home or property?

March 20, 2011 in Questions

4182437395 af43b907fe m Can adult w/ cerebral palsy own a home or property?
I have a brother age 50 and as much as I would love to have him live with me. I can’t. I live on second floor and I am told he can’t because it would be a problem in case of emergency. But He wants me to find a place where he can move with me. Me and my husband have been looking for first floor apartments (we all are in the NYC area) But there hard to find. I spoke with my husband about it. Hoping to find a house to buy…but I am sure there are more resources for my brother to get loans than us. And it would be his home and we are his tenants.

Adult children with cerebral palsy having renal disease complications…?

March 9, 2011 in Questions

1076267344 23c59f35cc m Adult children with cerebral palsy having renal disease complications...?
My 23 year old son with cerebral palsy and severe developmental delays was recently diagnosed with stage III renal disease of both kidneys, according to the lab work and all their numbers. However, he shows no outward symptoms and had I not known there was anything wrong with his kidneys, I wouldn’t be extremely concerned. The nephrologist told me that in chronic kidney disease, there are no symptoms when it first starts, but Monday, she called me to tell me that he is in acute renal disease with only 16% functioning, which I find very difficult to believe as he seems fine — no swelling, no loss of appetite, no lethargy, normal muscle control, no whining, no paleness, etc. so we repeated the blood work yesterday. I pray that the results are much, much improved!

Does anyone know of this happening with people with CP and developmental delay?
